Anyway, Daddy-O's Pub would like to give you a brief history of the game we all love and know as Darts...
It is believed that Darts began when a bunch of bored soldiers decided to challenge one another by throwing their spears into a turned over barrel, that later evolved into a target from a cut up tree trunk. The rings in the trunk were perfect for keeping scores. As the weather outdoors became a factor, just like in any outdoor sports, Darts took shelter as an indoor game. At this point is when the length of the darts were shortened and rules were created. Even with all of this going on, Darts maintained it's military relationship with the founding of the "British Empire". The soldiers use their drinking clubs (much like Daddy-O's Pub) and the love for the game grew with the fitted dartboard throughout the Empire as citizens of different countries embraced the game.
As the game grew and turned into a universal pastime, "The Dart" became regulated. The barrel of the dart was a piece of cut wood trunk that has a length of four inches with feathers fixed to one end and a metal tip at the other. In 1898, a "folded paper" target was create by an American. In 1906, an Englishman perfected the barrel made of metal. Sometime, in between, the system of numbering the dartboard was formulated and accepted by all. Also during that time, dart players created regulations for throwing or tossing distance to come up with more "standards" for the game. The "Throwing Distance" was marked by three beer crates, from Hockey & Sons Brewery in England, placed one after another that spanned a total of 9 feet from the (Oche) line to the dartboard. Eventually Hockey and Sons changed the size of their crates and so did the length between the (Oche) line and dartboard. At this point the length changed to only eight feet and was continued to be the standard length for years.
By the 1900’s, the darts and its rules became widely established into the game that is recognized and accepted today. The dartboard size, the distance of throwing and the darts size were all standardized. All over the world, many people enjoyed playing darts. Dart Teams, Professional Dart Clubs and Dart Associations were organized.
A Fun Little Darts Fact...Did you know that the old name for a dartboard is "Butt"? It came from a French Word meaning "Target".
